To what extent can a space in danger of perpetual collapse, no longer guarantee our usual perception?

The work is an encounter in which bodies are located in different forms of potentialities as they are entangled in structures of constant demolition. Their slowness, resistance and precarity are expressions of the attempt as well as the urge to challenge our relation to time and space, which centers mainly human conditions. Inspired by concepts of more-than-human nature, we strive to move towards a more open experience of different temporalities and perceptions. In dialogue with different materialities, an imaginary landscape invites the present bodies to oscillate between theatricality, literality and abstraction. Their states of presence, co-existence and entanglement are negotiated in the performance through a sense of “making time”.

How can choreography be thought of as a speculative practice that challenges normative human ways of attending, perceiving and being?

During my research I engaged in multiple ways of moving alongside, moving with and as different materialities. It allowed me to question the predominant mode of perception of the human body in life as well as in performing arts. Absence and presence, intensities and diverse modes of disappearance have become current choreographic and artistic strategies to challenge the prevalent relationship of the human body to its environment.

Melting Eyes is a multimedia performance that explores the binaries of nature & culture, body & technologies, human & material, natural & artificial, emotionality & frigidity.

Inspired by more-than-human nature and in dialogue with different materialities such as clay, jelly and sand, anassemblage of movement, moving image, technology (screens) and sound form a landscape in which the body oscillates between theatricality, literality and abstraction. The performance creates a particular landscape by performative actions and movements, eg. the screens will bemoved and placed in a certain score based logic, sculpture as well as sand will be revealed and composed in the space.

Melting Eyes was made as sequel of my graduation work reverberation, by developing further compositional and material strategies I have applied in reverberation. Both of my works are installations of potential performative situations which are created by staging actions and materials that imply certain activation. Both works leave a landscape of leftovers, past sound and vibration, broken drum sticks, geology of sand and soil, misplaced television screens.

The choreographic installation Soft Stone has its origins in the work Hypothetic Bodies (2021). In the Milchhof pavilion, the choreographic and filmic material finds a new form. Soft Stone explores bodies, sound and materialities that meet in a vacuum between action and standstill. In this extreme state, these bodies develop their own distorted rhythm, a togetherness and a temporality that always contain a form of potentiality.Concept, choreography, performance, installation: Julia Keren Turbahn, Simone Gisela Weber
Sound: Nikola Pieper
Live sound and technical support: Ernesto Cárcamo Cavazos
Video edit, installation: Simone Gisela Weber
Artistic support installation, space: Hanna Kritten Tangsoo
Artistic support installation, video: Svenja Simone Schulte
The visual material is taken from the earlier work Hypothetic Bodies, which was awarded as a film in 2021:

‚reverberation‘ consist of a 4- channel video installation and a performative installation which together deal with the performativity of materiality and the inhabited violence, symbolic power and gender/class struggle.

On a compositional and musical level which is presented in repetition, synchronicity, mirroring and jump cuts, ‚reverberation‘ explores the plasticity of materials, emotionality and their resistance to human control.

Furthermore, ‚reverberation‘ is a work on body memory, on what is left in human flesh, structure and architecture. My grandfather was a bricklayer. Actually I knew that, but the choice of working with bricks was not consciously directed by this family history. My mom mentioned it in a side sentence after I told her I am working with bricks. I felt very comfortable in working with bricks. I fell in love with the materiality, the fragility but firmness, the uniformity but difference, their heaviness but still light enough to carry. They left marks on my body, in shape of muscles formed by laboring them, blue spots, scratches and red color mark from their minerals. But they were gentle. My body new how to handle. From an artistic side, coming from choreography and performance, I enjoyed the resistance I had to work through. There was an interplay of control, being controlled and losing control (on both sides: bricks and performer).

I’ve got curious about the memory held by a material and picked up the footage for exploring my fascination further. The process of editing, the attempt to highlight the materiality of the bricks, to make the synthesis of the different bodies tangible brought me even closer to the material.

The performative installation consisting of drum set, and bricks made of ballistic gel, I examine the plasticity of bodies. The bricks become the human flesh. The human transforms into bricks. Ballistic Gel is a resemblance of human flesh. A material that imitates the density of the human flesh, used in police, military, forensic and medical context, to test and reconstruct the penetration of needles, bullets, knifes. They look innocent but embody violence and cruelty. The installation is accompanied by a sound piece, which is interrupting and disturbing the space of Mylly occasionally and surprisingly. The musical composition is based on editing methods used in the video installation and explores a possible sound of bullets in space.
The performance installation was performed by Henri Nikkilä

Leashed Unleashed offers us a look at the mechanisms of control to which the human body is subjected - external control as well as internal discipline. What do we experience physically and affectively when we are in a state of losing control or being controlled?
Field research and interviews with people who deal daily with adaptations of the body to
(self-)imposed social control mechanisms inspire the choreography. Ambivalent movement material and poetic stories of professionals in fields such as plastic surgery, the BDSM scene or fitness training are put together in a visually powerful scenic collage that creates divergent and free spaces of perception.

In modern functional systems such as economic, political, but also private systems, in which people move in the 21st century they should act as reflectively, quickly and effectively as possible. The contemporary body is subject to a specific time regime of acceleration: restless, dissected and hyperactive. Hypothetic Bodies breaks with this doctrine and explores the state of contemplation as an active gesture of questioning. Thereby the performance investigates bodies, sound and materialities that meet in a vacuum between action and stasis. In this extreme state, these bodies develop their own distorted rhythm, togetherness and temporality which always contain a notion of potentiality.

Due to the pandemic measures Hypothetic Bodies resulted in a film version in collaboration with the filmmaker Svenja Simone Schulte. The zoomed-in camera view allows the choreographic material to be explored in a different way. A cinematic dramaturgy of deceleration that follows the body closely evokes different bodily temporalities. Through specific editing, the body dissolves into individual parts and the space in which it moves becomes unidentifiable - a landscape that allows different bodies and temporalities to appear.

LUST by Anna Aristarkhova (Sophiensaele, 2018)

DE

ENG
Lust transforms the Hochzeitssaal into a mysterious garden. Open spaces invite to see and be seen while the shades of green become attractive hiding places. Oscillating between being humans, animals and mythical creatures, five performers explore various rituals to bring themselves closer to the state of lust. Between domesticated touches and an overwhelming loss of control, sometimes innocently and full of joy, sometimes driven by an impulse to possess each other, they face tensions and contradictions Lust is an existential driver and unattainable goal at the same time. Without it, the garden and its inhabitants would stand still…
